I started doing school visits, and I think that’s when the feeling of being an author became real. When young students come up to you, tell you they loved your book and would you sign your autograph on a scrap of paper made it seem real. Someone wanted my autograph???
Take the word and bring it alive. For example: Her voice reminded me of a night 'round the campfire--warm, smokey, and tinged with a bit of fire when she got angry.
What we do, as writers, is give a piece of our soul to the reader, or at least we should strive for this. We tell stories that need to be told. We say things that need to be said, even if it is not popular or politically correct.
